Embodying Grief Through Song

Singing is the language of grief, praise, and wonder. In this peaceful and community driven event, we will learn simple songs to support you and your grief as you learn to heal and hold space for your grief.

Join us in Lakewood’s beautiful historic chapel as we explore and normalize grief as a healthy and necessary response to losing someone or something that you love. Come to have a greater understanding of the importance of grieving in a community, and the role that song can hold in guiding you through your grief journey.

COVID-19 Safety Protocols and Precautions

Due to the intimate nature of this event, we are requesting that all participants provide proof of vaccination or a negative covid test within 72 hours. We will assess the need for masks as the event gets closer and update all attendees through an email.

About your instructors

Sarina Partridge, singing is the language of grief and praise, wonder, and wisdom; we sing the world we want to inhabit, and we sing to understand the world we live in now. Sarina is a musician, song-leader and educator in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She feels most alive when learning, creating and sharing songs. Sarina performs, teaches, and tours with a wide variety of music projects – Eastern European and Yiddish song, old-time music, community song-leading… and everything in between. Anne Murphy, bringing ceremony to life with a hands-on approach to death. Celebrant, home vigil guide, and death educator. Anne is trained in the art of supporting individuals and families through the season of death and dying through heart-centered, compassionate and meaningful conversations, rituals, and ceremonies. Anne is the co-founder of the Minnesota Death Collaborative and serves on the Minnesota Threshold Network Leadership Committee and recently completed her term at the National Home Funeral Alliance Board. The Historic Lakewood Memorial Chapel

This event will take place in the beautiful and historic Lakewood Memorial Chapel. This stunning building was built in 1910 by architect Harry Wild Jones, and is modeled after the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. It is one of the only examples of Byzantine style chapels in the US, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Click here for more information on the Lakewood Memorial Chapel.

Bike parking is also available at a bike rack near the front gate.

Parking

Parking is available on any of the roads inside Lakewood’s gates unless otherwise noted with a no parking sign. Handicap parking will be available near the chapel entrance. Lakewood does not have an onsite parking lot – it is street parking only. This means you may have to park a short distance away and walk. We strongly encourage carpooling and taking public transportation.

Bussing 

There is a bus that stops right outside of Lakewood’s gates.

Biking

There is also a nice ride station available on 34th/Hennepin, and 36th/Bryant. Lakewood only has one small bike rack.

Accessibility Notice

Due to the historic nature of this venue, there are limited accessibility accommodations that can be made. Accessibility notices are below:

• Handicap accessible parking will be available near the entrance of the chapel
• A ramp is available leading into the chapel
• All seating is in fixed pews – there is some room in the back of the venue for a wheelchair but it is limited
• A handicap accessible restroom is only available in the lower level of the building and does require guests to go outside and around the back of the building – there is no onsite elevator.
• Two single stall restrooms are available on the main level but cannot accommodate a wheelchair.

Restrooms

Two single stall restrooms are available in the chapel. An additional  restroom is available in the lower level of the chapel but can only be accessed via stairs or going outside and around the building.
