Explore the beauty of Lakewood by taking a free walking tour. Lakewood tour guides will discuss the living legacy rooted within the historic grounds of Lakewood on this immersive arboretum tour. Journey among centuries-old bur oaks and prehistoric ginkgoes, explore vibrant new plantings shaping the future canopy, and uncover the science, stories, and symbolism that make these 4,000 trees a vital urban forest. From tree biology to climate resilience, this walk invites you to see Lakewood not just as a resting place, but as a thriving, ever-evolving landscape of life.

Where to meet

This tour begins at Lakewood’s historic Lakewood Memorial Chapel. Follow directional signs to the event or use Google Maps for GPS navigation.

Accessibility information

  • Tour guides use voice amplifiers.
  • The tour group walks a ~3/4 mile loop at a slow to moderate pace on paved roads and turf grass.
  • Parts of this tour may not be wheelchair or scooter accessible. If you wish to attend using a wheelchair or scooter, please email us at events@lakewoodcemetery.org so your guides can plan an accessible route.

Restrooms

The chapel’s restrooms are available before and at the end of the tour. Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of the chapel, the single-stall restrooms are not wheelchair accessible.

Parking and Transportation

Driving Directions

Feel free to park anywhere along Lakewood’s roads unless otherwise noted with a no parking sign. Please do not park or drive on the grass.

Bus Directions

A bus stop is located right outside of Lakewood’s gates. Please refer to the Metro Transit website for the most up to date information about bus lines and schedules.

Bike Directions

Biking at Lakewood is permitted to and from and event, service, or grave. Lakewood has several small bike racks. Bike rack locations are noted on the map below.

Please do not lock bikes to any of our signs or trees. Please use caution when biking through Lakewood and yield to any vehicles or machinery. A 20mph speed limit is enforced. External speakers playing music are not permitted at Lakewood.

Our cemetery roads were not designed for biking. Unlike city streets, there are no stop signs or traffic signals. Often, people driving in the cemetery may be grieving and distracted. Because of this, recreational biking is not encouraged.

Cancellations

The tour will be cancelled if dangerous weather occurs or is highly likely in the forecast. If we must cancel, this webpage will be updated and we will alert registrants by email (from Eventbrite) with at least 2 hours’ notice.

The Lakewood Heritage Foundation

This event is free. If you wish to make a donation, we invite you to contribute to the Lakewood Heritage Foundation. Donations to the Lakewood Heritage Foundation support educational programming and the preservation and restoration of Lakewood’s landscape, art, architecture and public spaces—for the benefit of all.
