Be inspired by the beauty of Lakewood to create poetic stories with your words in this hands-on poetry 101 class. Use creative visualization, drawing and journaling to get the ideas rolling and create poems that sparkle. Learn about metaphor, figurative language, pattern and rhythm while being introduced to poets from around the world. Share poems aloud for the written word to come alive.

About Your Instructor

Marie Olofsdotter is a Swedish-born painter, poet, and picture books artist. Her books have been honored by a Benjamin Franklin Award and a Minnesota Book Award. Marie is the recipient of a Loft Mentor Series Award in Poetry, as well as grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Jerome Foundation. Among her titles are A Picture Book of Cesar Chavez (Holiday House) and Sofia and the Heartmender (Holy Cow! Press). When Marie teaches, she sets the stage for her participants to express their unique visual and literary vision. She fans the creative flame while teaching craft and provides an inspired and artful learning environment.

Can anyone attend this event?

All are welcome – you do not need to be associated with Lakewood or have family/friends at Lakewood to attend this event. Please keep in mind that we are an active cemetery, and we ask that you are quiet and respectful of anyone who may be visiting loved ones onsite.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking (free) is available along roads near the Garden Mausoleum inside the cemetery. There is a Metro Transit bus stop just outside of Lakewood’s front gates at 36th & Hennepin Ave. It is within walking distance to the Garden Mausoleum (2 blocks). If you come by bicycle, you can lock your bike in the racks provided near the front gates.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, printed tickets are not required. We will have a guest list at the door.

All materials are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own notebook if you would prefer.

The Lakewood Garden Mausoleum

This event will meet in the beautiful Garden Mausoleum. Signs will be posted directing you to the event location or click here for GPS navigation through Google Maps. 

Event will take place primarily outdoors, with some indoor elements. Restrooms will be available in the Garden Mausoleum as well.

Signs will be posted to get you to the event site.

Parking

Parking is available on any of Lakewood’s roads. Please be mindful of narrow roadways and do not park on both sides of the street if two vehicles are not able to get through. We strongly encourage carpooling.

There is a bus stop outside of Lakewood’s gates, and then it is a short walk (about 2 city blocks) to the event location.

A bike rack is also available to the west of the main gate. There are no bike racks available near the event location – please do not lock bikes to trees.
