About Lakewood Volunteer Tour Guides
Being a Lakewood Tour Guide is an exciting opportunity to learn and teach about the wealth of information at Lakewood. Tour Guides will introduce visitors to the history, art, nature, architecture and more while also facilitating conversation. Lakewood has a variety of tours, including history walking tours, trolley tours and arboretum tours. Tours happen weekly, with additional opportunities for tours at specific events, such as Doors Open, Memorial Day and Fall Colors.
Many people attend Lakewood’s tours, including those that have loved ones memorialized here. Part of the tour guides’ job is to ensure that there is acknowledgement of the sensitive nature of this space, as we are still an active cemetery, and have services nearly every day.
There are skills and expectations that are crucial to being a successful tour guide.
- Public-speaking is of the utmost importance, as this is the largest aspect of this role. Tour guides lead groups of around 30 people per tour.
- The ability to facilitate conversations and encourage questions
- We expect tour guides to be responsible and manage their time, being punctual and signing up for a minimum number of tours per year.
- Effectively communicating with the Volunteer Coordinator about availability as well as with the tour groups on the content of the tour is highly important.
- An interest in local history, architecture, nature and more with the desire to learn. A background in these fields is beneficial but not required.
