Building a better Lakewood | Learn about our new Welcome Center

You Are Welcome Here

You are welcome to visit Lakewood, one of the most beautiful urban cemeteries in the country, every day of the year, including holidays. Our open gate hours change with each season.   Our administrative office, located just to the left when you enter the front gates, is open Monday – Saturday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. throughout the year, with some exceptions for holidays.

Attending a Funeral

If you are attending a funeral, you may want to review our list of Upcoming Funerals to confirm the time and location.

Visiting a Loved One’s Grave

If you need assistance locating a grave site, you can use our burial search tool or visit our administrative office. Before leaving decorations at a memorial site, please review our decoration policies, which are designed to consider everyone’s safety and visiting experience.

Be Respectful

We kindly ask that out of respect for grieving families and the sacred nature of this space you practice good etiquette and follow our rules during your visit. Please familiarize yourself with our policies in regard to pets, bikes and more on our Rules, Etiquette and Decorating Policies page.

Driving and Walking

Lakewood has nine miles of wide, winding roads for driving and walking throughout the grounds. Our property map can help you become familiar with our grounds and pinpoints some of our famous memorials.   Feel free to park anywhere along the road, but please do not park or drive on the grass. Please be sensitive and respectful of others’ privacy and avoid funerals or graveside services.

Visit our historic Memorial Chapel

The Memorial Chapel is the centerpiece of the cemetery and a priceless architectural treasure—one of the most perfect examples of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States. You can visit the chapel during Lakewood community events or stop by our administrative office to see if the Chapel is open.

Visit our Garden and Community Mausoleums

Lakewood’s Garden and Community Memorial Mausoleums provide a year-round space to remember. No matter the weather, these serene, contemplative spaces allow for quiet reflection. Both mausoleums are open every day of the week from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including holidays.

Add a ribbon to the Living Memory Tree

Across the street from the Memorial Chapel, you’ll discover our Japanese Lilac festooned with ribbons. We invite you to add a ribbon in memory of a loved one to this community memorial. Please use the free, biodegradable ribbons available in our administrative office or at Lakewood events.

Visit Jo Pond

Jo Pond is a peaceful, serene water feature that can be used for private scattering services and memorial events. This beautiful spot is popular with nature lovers and bird watchers. Additionally, Jo Pond serves as the site of our annual Lantern Lighting Celebration.
