William Hood Dunwoody

DUNWOODY William Hood, Minneapolis. Res 52 S 10th st. Flour miller. Born March 14, 1841 in Chester county Pa, son of James and Hannah (Hood) Dunwoody. Raised on farm. he married Katie L. Patten of Philadelphia in 1868; they had no children. He began his business career with uncle in grain and flour business; engaged in same for self under firm name of Dunwoody & Robertson 1860-69; engaged in flour business representing eastern houses in Minneapolis 1869; member Tiffany, Dunwoody & Co and H Darrow & Co 1871; organized Minneapolis Millers’ Assn; an organizer of and now v pres of the Washburn-Crosby Co; pres N W National Bank; member Minneapolis and New York Chambers of Commerce. Member Minneapolis Club; Metropolitan Club N Y; Minnesota Club St Paul. He spent much time abroad and delights all things to escape from the cares of into the open country with dog and gun. Dunwoody Institute was founded in 1914, when Minneapolis businessman William Hood Dunwoody left three million dollars in his will to "provide fo r all time a place where youth without distinction on account of race, color or religious prejudice, may learn the useful trades and crafts, and thereby fit themselves for the better performance of life's duties."[1] When his widow, Kate L. Dunwoody, died a year later she left additional funds to keep the college moving forward.
