Geanakoplos, Christie John (also known as Christie John Geankoplis), age 84, of Edina. Born June 18, 1921 in Minneapolis, died November 15, 2005 at Edina Care Center. Preceded in death by his father, John C. Geanakoplos; mother, Helen J. Geanakoplos; sister, Demetra J. Lestakis; and brother, Thomas J. Geanakoplos. Survived by his brother, Deno J. Geanakoplos of North Haven, CT; niece, Connie Geanakoplos of New York, NY; nephew, John D. Geanakoplos of North Haven, CT; niece, Joanne Rotenberg of Edina, MN; niece, Joanne Strain of Blaine, MN; niece, Amalia Tillman of Mpls, MN; niece, Christine Lone of Maple Grove, MN; cousin, Tom Economou of Miami, FL; and cousin, Julia Economou of New York, NY. Christie was Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University o f Minnesota from 1982 until present. He was the author of the chemical engineering textbook, "Transport Processes and Unit Operations," 3rd ed, and the textbook, "Mass Transport Phenomena," in chemical engineering and published over 50 scientific research articles. He was also a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Ohio State University from 1949 until 1982 before coming to the University of Minnesota. During World War II from 1943 until 1946 he was chief engineer for Atlantic Richfield Corporation in charge of process research to produce aviation gasoline for the armed forces. He was a consultant for 20 years for General Mills Chemicals and for Battelle Memorial Research Institute in Columbus Ohio. He was the state high school singles tennis champion in 1939 and won the doubles title twice. He was the captain of the tennis team at the University of Minnesota in 1942 and 1943. He was awarded the Big Ten Western Conference Medal in 1943 for the outstanding scholar and athlete at Minnesota, the first time ever for a minor sport. He received his B.S. in chemical engineering at Minnesota in 1943, his Master's degree in 1946 at the University of Pennsylvania, and his Ph.D. in 1949 at Pennsylvania. Funeral Service 11:30 AM Monday, November 21 at St. Mary's Greek Orthodox Church, 35th and Irving Ave. S., Mpls. Interment Lakewood Cemetery.
