Exhibition: “An Opening” by Andrew Grum Carr
February 2, 2026 - March 10, 2026
View An Opening, a new exhibition by Lakewood’s Artist in Residence Andrew Grum Carr, whose poetic approach to both painting and writing invites viewers into moments of quiet reflection. This exhibition marks the culmination of a deeply personal, nine-month creative journey through grief, memory, and the natural rhythms of Lakewood Cemetery.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a narrative essay inspired by Andrew’s visit to Lakewood with his students following the death of a classmate—an experience that sparked a profound meditation on loss, teaching, and community. Alongside the essay are nine large-scale watercolor paintings, each capturing Lakewood in a different season. Influenced by the aesthetics of Japanese woodblock prints, these meditative landscapes evoke the passage of time and the healing found in nature’s cycles.
Throughout his residency, Andrew could often be found sketching and painting on the cemetery grounds, letting Lakewood’s serene atmosphere shape his creative process. An Opening invites guests to experience that same atmosphere—through words, through color, and through a quiet honoring of life’s impermanence.
An Opening will be on display in the Welcome Center February 2 – March 10.
