Celebrate the beauty of autumn at Lakewood at our Fall Colors Celebration. This open-house style event invites the whole community to enjoy live music, participate in nature-inspired art activities, and sip warm apple cider as you explore our grounds.

Live Music

Uncle Kenny | 10:00am- Noon
Uncle Kenny is a four-piece string band from the Twin Cities known for their dynamic blend of bluegrass, old time, classic country, jazz, and more. With rich vocal harmonies, energetic instrumentals, and thoughtful arrangements, they bring a fresh twist to traditional roots music. Their performances are both nostalgic and full of surprises, keeping audiences captivated from start to finish.

Suzy Plays Guitar | Noon – 2:00pm
Suzy Plays Guitar is made up of Kelsey Wyrd and Tricia Schweitzer. Both are local songwriters. They have been writing and playing together for over 7 years and have played the east and west coasts in addition to their homestate of Minnesota. The dynamic duo provides a unique sound featuring both rhythm and lead guitar over lush vocals.
Interactive Activities
Explore and learn with interactive activities and experiences for the whole family. Activities will take place in and around the Welcome Center. While most offerings are available throughout the event, please note that guided tours will be at specific times.

Natural Inks
Led by artist Kim Boustead
Explore a spectrum of colors—each with their own charm—produced with natural pigments from local plants. Create a painted postcard or a unique work of art to take home as a memento.

Walking Tours – Legacy Trees of Lakewood
Exact times will be announced closer to the event.
Join Lakewood’s volunteer guides to walk a loop that introduces you to the arboretum. Topics include tree diversity, benefits, identification, and, of course, their beauty. The walking route is about 3/4 mile on paved roads and turf grass and lasts about 60-70 minutes.

Pumpkin Painting
Celebrate the beauty of autumn by painting a mini-pumpkin for your home. Available while supplies last!

Ask an Arborist
Our friends from Ostvig Tree Care will be onsite to answer questions about personal tree care.
Self-guided activities
In addition to guided tours and artist-led projects taking place near the Welcome Center, some activities encourage exploration at your own pace, either on your own or with a small group.

Visit the Memorial Chapel
Enter Lakewood’s historic Memorial Chapel, the centerpiece of the cemetery, and marvel at its intricately mosaiced interior that has enchanted visitors since 1910.

Living Memory Tree
Pick up a ribbon in the Welcome Center that you can tie to the Living Memory Tree, across the street from the Memorial Chapel.

Focus on the Seasons photography contest
Participate in Lakewood’s Focus on the Seasons photography contest. Visit the Welcome Center for a flyer with details and inspiring prompts for your photographic journey.

Nature Journey’s
Explore Lakewood’s grounds with our interactive Nature Journeys. These self-guided experiences highlight the natural beauty of Lakewood throughout our history. Explore the full collection here.

Self-guided history tour
Hosts in the Welcome Center can provide maps of the grounds, including a self-guided tour brochure with over 60 points of interest, from community memorials to well-known individuals who are laid to rest at Lakewood.

Nature quest
Spark wonder about biodiversity at Lakewood by grabbing a Nature Quest sheet, filled with clues you can look for throughout our tree-filled landscape.

This event takes place in and around Lakewood’s Welcome Center. Directional signs will be posted. In the event of rain, activities will be moved indoors.
Parking and Transportation
Driving Directions
Parking is available on any of the roads inside Lakewood’s gates unless otherwise noted with a no parking sign. Handicap parking will be available near the Welcome Center. Lakewood does not have an onsite parking lot – it is street parking only. This means you may have to park a short distance away and walk. We strongly encourage carpooling and public transportation.
Bus Directions
Metro Transit lines 6 and 23 stop directly outside of Lakewood’s gates, a short walk to the Welcome Center.
Bike Directions
Please lock bikes at the rack near the main entrance gates and walk to the Welcome Center. Do not lock bikes to trees or signs, leave bicycles unlocked on the grounds., or leave shared bikes or scooters overnight.
FAQs
Can I bring my dog to this event?
Dogs and other pets are not permitted anywhere at Lakewood, with the exception of service dogs.
Is there a minimum age requirement to participate?
No, all ages are welcome. This is a great event for the whole family!
