About this Session

Join the Lakewood Events and Programs team to learn about the responsibilities and requirements for being a Volunteer Tour Guide. We will discuss schedule requirements, types of tours, what representing Lakewood looks like and more. Learn if being a Lakewood Volunteer Tour Guide is a good fit for you and have the opportunity to ask questions.

About Lakewood Volunteer Tour Guides

Being a Lakewood Tour Guide is an exciting opportunity to learn and teach about the wealth of information at Lakewood. Tour Guides will introduce visitors to the history, art, nature, architecture and more while also facilitating conversation. Lakewood has a variety of tours, including history walking tours, trolley tours and arboretum tours. Tours happen weekly, with additional opportunities for tours at specific events, such as Doors Open, Memorial Day and Fall Colors.

Many people attend Lakewood’s tours, including those that have loved ones memorialized here. Part of the tour guides’ job is to ensure that there is acknowledgement of the sensitive nature of this space, as we are still an active cemetery, and have services nearly every day.

There are skills and expectations that are crucial to being a successful tour guide.

  • Public-speaking is of the utmost importance, as this is the largest aspect of this role. Tour guides lead groups of around 30 people per tour.
  • The ability to facilitate conversations and encourage questions
  • We expect tour guides to be responsible and manage their time, being punctual and signing up for a minimum number of tours per year.
  • Effectively communicating with the Volunteer Coordinator about availability as well as with the tour groups on the content of the tour is highly important.
  • An interest in local history, architecture, nature and more with the desire to learn. A background in these fields is beneficial but not required.

List of events in Photo View

The Lakewood Welcome Center

This event takes place in the Community Room in the Welcome Center at Lakewood. This beautiful, state-of-the-art building provides a warm and sunny backdrop for community events, in addition to offering quiet space for families to gather and make arrangements for end-of-life.

Parking and Transportation

Driving Directions

Parking is available on any of the roads inside Lakewood’s gates unless otherwise noted with a no parking sign. Handicap parking will be available near the Chapel as well as the Welcome Center. Lakewood does not have an onsite parking lot – it is street parking only. This means you may have to park a short distance away and walk. We strongly encourage carpooling and public transportation.

Bus Directions

Metro Transit lines 6 and 23 stop directly outside of Lakewood’s gates, a short walk to the Memorial Chapel and the Welcome Center.

Bike Directions

Please lock bikes at the rack near the main entrance gates and walk to the Welcome Center. Do not lock bikes to trees or signs, leave bicycles unlocked on the grounds., or leave shared bikes or scooters overnight.

The Lakewood Heritage Foundation

The tour guide program is sponsored by the Lakewood Heritage Foundation. If you wish to make a donation, we invite you to contribute to the Lakewood Heritage Foundation. Donations to the Lakewood Heritage Foundation support educational programming and the preservation and restoration of Lakewood’s landscape, art, architecture and public spaces—for the benefit of all.
